Cedar is a popular choice for front doors in New Zealand, and most people understandably want to maintain the natural finish of the wood. However, left uncoated the wood is exposed to the harsh New Zealand climate.
Applying a varnish is one option, but it needs to be marine grade, regular varnishes will quickly break down and peel under the strain of strong UV rays. Marine grade varnishes usually require 4 to 5 coats to be applied but will maintain their integrity against the sun.
For the most natural finish our preferred choice is the Liberon Superior Danish Oil, penetrating the wood Danish Oil will leave a natural silky finish, a varnish will always look like an artificial layer on the surface. Added UV filters protect the wood from sunlight whilst water resistance will keep out the rain.
